Forecast Calls For Rough Skin Conditions
The cold weather has finally arrived! Cold winter air is not a friend to our delicate skin, so we must take a little extra care this time of year, especially as we get older. While most of us welcome the chilly air after a toasty summer, we are not prepared for the havoc our skin is about to endure. At the first hint of winter we are quick to winterize our cars, boats, and homes but I wonder….. do you winterize your skin?
Here are a few tips for “winterizing” your skin to keep that healthy glow and to fight off the dryness that winter brings to our skin.
1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Hydration is important year round but during the winter months it is even more important. Drink your water ladies! Your skin will thank you for it. Also, investing in a humidifier will also help keep a little moisture in the air and help fight the dryness.
2. Switch to a creamy cleanser versus gel, and rinse with lukewarm water. Hot water can cause dryness which will lead to sensitivity, itchiness, and/or flaky skin.
3. If you typically use a lighter moisturizer, switching to one that is rich will help lock in the moisture and keep it there.
4. Eating high-antioxidant fruits and veggies help feed your skin from the inside out. Squash, pumpkin, blueberries, pomegranates and cranberries are just a few examples of high-antioxidant foods that are in season right now.
These tips also go for the rest of your body! It is so tempting to take a steaming hot shower when it is 30* outside, but this only dries your skin out more. Cooler, lukewarm water won’t be as harsh on your skin. Also, consider a creamy body wash and lotion that is more rich than your summer lotion. Moisturizing in the morning and before bed will help keep your skin hydrated! Warming your lotion before you apply it will not only feel good, but it will also help with absorption.
So, let’s winterize our skin by hydrating, moisturizing, eating healthy, and we can make it through winter with beautiful skin!
